DR. ABIMBOLA QUITS ALLIANCE FOR DEMOCRACY TO MOVE FORWARD

The gubernatorial candidate of th Alliance for Democracy, Dr. Abimbola Ajayi-Ojora has denounced her membership from the party as a result of dishonesty, injustice and fraudulent played by the party leaders. Abimbola, who decleared this in a press briefing at the party secretariat, said she felt disdained by the unscrupulous act dismayed in leadership of the AD in manipulating and shortchanging her candidacy on claims that she has not spend enough for the party. She explained that integrity, credibility and commitment, which should be the foundation of partisan politics, are lacking in AD; thereby quit the party and chose to move forward to a greater height with her supporters for a better. MURIC CALLS FOR WITHDRAWAL OF SOLDIERS FROM TINUBU’S HOUSE

Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has condemned the presence of Soldiers, parading the main gate of the national leader of All Progressives Congress, Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The Director of the group, Professor Ishaq Akintola, who said this today, in a Statement made available to Newsdeskng, noted that the soldiers allegedly became a permanent feature close to the entrance of the gate to Tinubu’s house along Bourdillon Road in Ikoyi. According to the statement, MURIC denounced the misuse of Soldiers by the Presidency and demanded the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of those soldiers. The release further stated that MURIC strongly suspects that the Presidency holds Tinubu responsible for debilitating its political empire. FEDERAL HIGH COURT DISMISES SUITS AGAINST JONATHAN

A Federal High Court judge in Abuja, Justice Ahmed Mohammed, sitting in Abuja, has struck out suit on the eligibility of President Goodluck Jonathan, to seek re-election, following an application by the plaintiffs to discontinue. The court ordered the plaintiffs to pay N50,000 to Jonathan whose lawyers had been made to file responses before the decision to withdraw the suit.   The plaintiffs are Prof. Tunde Samuel, Dr. Junaidu Mohammed, Rasak Adeogun and Yahaya Ezeemoo Ndu. President Jonathan was the only defendant in the suit. The court had on February 3, 2015, fixed Wednesday for hearing of the suit. But the notice of discontinuance of the suit was filed on February 4.

LAGOS FARMERS DECRY COST OF TRANSPORTATION

Lagos State farm dealers has decried high cost of transportation of farm produce from the hinterland to the urban areas. The traders under the umbrella of Iyanoba Commodity Dealers Association Ojo, stated that harsh business environment was adversely affecting their business.   They said if government could intervene, through affordable and cheap means of transportation, prices of farm produce such as oranges, tomatoes, yam and plantain would be affordable to the end-users. Hamsat Balogun, an orange dealer, says currently it costs double of what she used to haul a loYry-load of oranges in 2000 from Lafia, Nassarawa State to Lagos.

EDUCATION: WAY OUT OF POVERTY

Education has been described as the bedrock of Nation building and the panacea to poverty in Nigeria. A Seven-Term Congressman in United States of America, Jerry Weller, stated this at the 12th Annual Leadership Lecture/Symposium, organised by Centre for Values in Leadership in Lagos. Speaking on "Leadership and The Challenge of Ultra-Poverty: Transforming The Poorest of The Poor" Weller, who was Chairman of the occasion, said sixty percent of Nigeria's population live below 250 Naira per day, resulting in mal-nutrition and high rate of child mortality in the country. According to Weller, it is important to know that children are dying every day, not because of war but due to Malnutrition, adding that one of the solutions to the pervasive poverty in the Land is to provide quality education to the children. According to its Programme Manager - Ayodele Adesanmi, Nigeria records five hundred and seventy-six maternal mortality ratio in one hundred thousand live births; being second to India. Some challenges that result to this high ratio, as explained by Adesanmi, includes overuse of staff, long awaiting time in the clinics, attitude of workers to work, unavailability of drugs, unstable power supply among others.
