EDUCATION: WAY OUT OF POVERTY

Education has been described as the bedrock of Nation building and the panacea to poverty in Nigeria.

A Seven-Term Congressman in United States of America, Jerry Weller, stated this at the 12th Annual Leadership Lecture/Symposium, organised by Centre for Values in Leadership in Lagos.

Speaking on "Leadership and The Challenge of Ultra-Poverty: Transforming The Poorest of The Poor" Weller, who was Chairman of the occasion, said sixty percent of Nigeria's population live below 250 Naira per day, resulting in mal-nutrition and high rate of child mortality in the country.

According to Weller, it is important to know that children are dying every day, not because of war but due to Malnutrition, adding that one of the solutions to the pervasive poverty in the Land is to provide quality education to the children.

He urged government at all levels and the Civil Society to implement a compulsory Universal Basic Education for the children and women in order to change the current situation.

The People Democratic Party Gubernatorial candidate for Lagos State, Jimi Agbaje, loud the importance of education to the economy development in the nation.

Agbaje stated that he believes that amount spent on education will surely have impact on the nation's development.

In the same vein, the Founder, Centre for Values in Leadership, Professor Pat Utomi, who was also celebrating his birthday, called for a collective effort to support the education of the Children in fighting against poverty in Nigeria.
